New Balance 580

New Balance is celebrating the 20th anniversary of their classic 580 model. To honor the occasion, they’re releasing a few special anniversary collections. To pay homage to the 580, we’ve decided to take a trip down memory lane and see how it became the classic we all know and love.

The original New Balance 580 was derived from the M585 model, which was made in the USA as an off-road running shoe. ABZORB Cushioning technology and stabilizing ROLLBAR engineering in the sole units made them lightweight and suitable for trail running. This led the midsole unit to be chunkier and more technical looking than others in the 500 series.

The made-in-the-USA model M585 was readapted for the Japanese market. Production was moved to Asia, and the shoe was renamed the MT580.

The shoe had a larger look than other New Balance models, making it less popular among consumers. It was time to head to the drawing board.

New Balance decided to do a collaboration with Mita Sneakers and Real Mad Hectic, a pioneering Japanese streetwear brand. They gave the MT580 a facelift, causing the popularity of the model to skyrocket among sneakerheads in Japan.

New Balance had many successful models, so why did Mita and Real Mad Hectic choose to collaborate on the MT580? Well, they wanted to make a shoe that stood out from the pack.

After the collaboration, the MT580 became a worldwide sensation.

With shoe technology changing at a rapid pace, New Balance decided it was time to give the MT580 an update. New REVlite cushioning was added to reduce the weight, and the shoe was renamed to the MRT580.

New Balance reached another milestone in 2013 releasing female sizes of the MRT580 in a wide array of colors.

The New Balance 580 turns 20! To celebrate the anniversary, New Balance is drawing from their roots. Just like the original M585, the new 580 is crafted in U.S. factories with the same commitment to excellence. And Eastbay is excited to offer special women’s and men’s editions of the beloved sneaker.
