Have you ever wanted a jean that would custom fit to your body? Look no further! The Levi’s 501 Original Shrink-To-Fit Jean does just that. This classic-fitting jean is made from authentic raw denim, perfect for forming to your body.
So how exactly do you go about getting these jeans to custom fit? Well, there are three different Levi’s recommended methods to this custom-fitting madness:
1. Go old school: buy true to size in the waist and two sizes up in length. Wear them in the tub, keep on to dry.
2. Line Dry: buy two sizes larger in length and waist. Machine wash on warm, and air dry for a rigid feel.
3. Unwashed: no need to size up — just hang them outside in the sun from time to time to keep them fresh.
In order to properly assess each of these methods, we tested it ourselves. Check out the before and after pictures below along with an overview of how the process worked.
Old School Bath Tub Method
Bath tub method? Yes, you’re actually supposed to sit in a bath tub with your Levi’s on. Sounds silly, but we found out that it really works.
What We Did: Had our tester sit in warm water for 15-20 minutes, towel off his pants, and sit in them for 4 hours until they were almost dry.
The Result: THEY SHRANK! As you can see in the photos, the length of the jeans definitely came up a couple of inches, and the fit became a little more narrow through the legs and across the backside.
Tips: If you’re fully committed to wearing the pants until they’re completely dry, try it on a warm day when you can sit/walk outside. However, we understand that this method might not be for everyone, so here are some tips to speed up the drying process: towel dry excess water after exiting the bathtub, use a hair dryer to dry the pants while still wearing them, or tumble dry in the dryer on low until damp, then wear until completely dry.
Line Dry Method
This method is less complicated and had a similar result to the previous method.
What We Did: Had our tester wash the jeans in warm water and hung them to dry inside.
The Result: The jeans shrank like they were supposed to, but not quite to the extent that the old school method did.
Tips: If you like the feel of rigid denim, wash less to maintain the raw authenticity.
For those of you who love the feel of raw denim, this is the method for you.
What We Did: Our tester wore his true-to-size jeans around for a couple days, then hung them outside when he felt they needed to be freshened up.
The Result: No shrinkage, and the jeans kept their rigid feel.
