The Butler Bulldogs came within inches of knocking off Duke in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Although everyone will remember the Bulldogs’ Gordon Hayward barely missing that half-court heave as Duke claimed the title, it was another player that initiated one of the greatest Cinderella stories in NCAA history. Butler’s Shelvin Mack started last year’s NCAA Tournament with 25 points in Butler’s first-round win against UTEP.
This year Shelvin Mack is back at the forefront of Butler basketball again averaging 15.6 points per game. Like all leaders do, Shelvin stepped up again in this year’s tournament. Although an unbelievable foul call countered his own mental mistake in Butler’s upset of top-ranked Pitt, Shelvin went 10-16 from the field including 7-12 from behind the three-point line, and finished with 30 points.
Next up for Shelvin Mack and Butler is the Florida Gators, a matchup that will determine which team moves on to the Final Four in Houston.
