Much has been made of the University of Oregon’s brand new $230 million dollar Matthew Knight Arena, which was named after the late son of chief donor and Nike Chairman Phil Knight. Particularly grabbing headlines is the arena’s unique basketball court, which was of course designed by legendary sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield. A salute to the tree-covered region and the original 1939 NCAA Championship Oregon “Tall Firs” basketball team, the court is unlike anything we’ve ever seen.

After months of build and anticipation, Matthew Knight Arena finally opened its doors to the public, as the Oregon Ducks hosted the Trojans of USC on Thursday night. Appropriately, Phil Knight was in the house amongst the 12,400 Duck faithful for the festivities. Behind a much-needed bench contribution from guard Malcolm Armstead, Oregon was able to hold off USC by a score of 68-62, making sure that ‘The Matt’ was opened in style.

Take a look at some photos from the big night below.

Last night, Cam Newton and the Auburn Tigers finished their title run by defeating the Oregon Ducks in the BCS Championship Game. For Auburn, the perfect season finished with their first national title since 1957. Although the game was not the high-scoring shootout of offensive brilliance that many expected, it couldn’t have been any closer, as Auburn kicked the winning field goal as time expired.

Auburn’s quest for a national title in football has not only been a long time coming, but it has also been quite the roller coaster for fans and players, both past and present. Over the last twenty years, the program has gone undefeated three times. Still, 2010 was the first of those seasons to result in a national title. Finally, after years of waiting, the fans and alumni can finally wear the navy and burnt orange as representatives of the best team in college football.

Week 5: College Football Co-Player of the Week

words_Jordan Hagedorn

Last week, I named Alabama stud and reigning Heisman RB Mark Ingram my College Player of the Week. This Week, Michigan QB Denard Robinson and Oregon RB LaMichael James are the first ever College Football Co-Players of the Week.

Robinson led the 19th-ranked Michigan Wolverines to a 42-35 win over the Indiana Hoosiers in which he was 10-for-16 passing, including completions for 17, 42 and 74 yards. His three TD passes came on strikes from 32, 3 and 70 yards respectively. He finished with 277 yards in the air. He was also dangerous on the ground, rushing 19 times for 217 yards. He ran for a 72-yard TD on Michigan’s first offensive possession and scored on a 4-yard run with 17 seconds left in the game. After an impressive win over Indiana, Michigan jumps one spot to #18 this week in the NCAA College Football rankings. I also named Robinson my Week 2 College Football Player of the Week.

Running Back LaMichael James and the 4th-ranked Oregon Ducks throttled 9th-ranked Stanford on Saturday by a score of 52-31. James ran the ball 31 times for 257 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter, a 3-yard run in the third quarter and broke a 76-yarder with one minute left in the game. The Ducks jumped ahead of Boise State in the rankings, moving up to #3 in the country.
