Nike Cross Nationals gives high-school runners the chance to compete against elite runners across the nation. After eight highly intense and competitive regional events, the focus is set on Portland, Oregon, where those runners who qualified will race for the chance to win the coveted Winged Goddess of Victory status at NXN 2013.

Per tradition, the championship event is held at Portland Meadows, a horse racing venue that’s converted into a spectacular cross-country course. Like traditional European cross-country meets, the event features a multiple loop racecourse staged with man-made obstacles. Attendees can expect temperatures between 30º and 50ºF. While most participants (and especially spectators) will hope for warm and dry conditions, wet and extreme weather are not uncommon this time of year in Portland.

Whether NXN is accompanied by rain, snow, or sunshine, it’s certain to be a memorable occasion for each athlete who qualified. Competitors arrive on either Wednesday or Thursday. This gives them at least one day off to relax, hang out, and prepare for the final. Pre-race events include personal gear fittings from Nike pro athletes, campus runs, and the opening ceremonies.

On Saturday, runners get their chance at cross-country glory. The girls’ championship race kicks off around 10 am PT and is followed by the boys’ championship race, which starts around 11:30 am PT. Award ceremonies follow each race. Later that night, runners can attend a farewell dance (if they have any energy left), where they can celebrate their athletic journey and all of their accomplishments by enjoying music and having some fun.

Ready to compete against the best cross-country runners in the nation? Nike Cross Nationals is your opportunity.

The 2013 Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) nationals-qualifying events head to New York on 11/30/2013 for the Northeast and New York Regionals. Truly unique, this event hosts two separate regional races at the same place on the same day. The Northeast Regional includes high school runners from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont while the New York Regional only has high school runners from New York State. Participants of each regional event compete to race at this year’s National Final, held in Portland, OR on 12/07/2013.

Both regionals are held at Bowdoin Park, located 80 miles north of New York City. “There is a reason we run two regionals,” meet director Paul Limmer states. “Bowdoin Park is located perfectly in upstate New York, making it easy for runners from each state to get to. It’s the most spectator friendly of all the regional courses. Plus, with the course overlooking the Hudson River, the place is gorgeous.”

What type of course can this year’s competitors expect? “Hills, turns, flats, and a huge hill in the middle,” Paul explains. “Bowdoin Park is a truly challenging venue. Many consider it to be the best cross-country course in the Northeast.” As if the course wasn’t difficult enough, runners may also have to overcome the weather. “Weather has almost always been cold,” Paul admits. “Temperatures below freezing are common, but this is cross country.” Knowing they can earn a spot at the National Final, elite runners will certainly be prepared to take on the course and the unpredictable weather.

Before they get a chance to compete, runners can attend a pasta party the night before. It’s filled with great food and a lot of fun, including door prizes, raffles, and an appearance by a professional Nike athlete.

After a good night’s sleep, racers should be focused on finishing first. The event gets underway with open races and USATF coed races. Before noon, open ceremonies set the stage for each regional’s boys’ and girls’ championship races.

Ready to compete against the best cross-country runners in the nation? Nike Cross Nationals is your opportunity.

The 2013 Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) nationals-qualifying events head to Cary, North Carolina on 11/30/2013. The Southeast Regional lets high school cross-country runners from Alabama, the District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia race for a chance to compete at this year’s National Final, held in Portland, OR on 12/07/2013.

The Southeast Regional takes place at WakeMed Soccer Park. The course is tucked in the woods surrounding the soccer fields and offers a challenging and scenic race. Temperatures in November can range from low 30s to high 50s, so runners can expect cool and possibly wet conditions.

The night before the race, runners can attend a pasta dinner to enjoy the food and have some fun. The next morning, the focus is back on the races. Boys’ and girls’ freshman/sophomore races start the event, followed by open races and a 5K community race. Then, all eyes are on the elite high school boys and girls as they run the championship races.

Ready to compete against the best cross-country runners in the nation? Nike Cross Nationals is your opportunity.

The 2013 Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) nationals-qualifying events head to The Woodlands, Texas on 11/23/2013. The South Regional lets high school cross-country runners from Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas race for a chance to compete at this year’s National Final, held in Portland, OR on 12/07/2013.

South Regional takes place at Bear Branch Park, located 30 miles north of Houston. According to the South Regional’s meet director Juris Green, “this year’s course is a brand new variation. The course has always been deceptively tough and will punish runners who go too fast too early. This new course should follow in those footsteps.”

With temperatures in November ranging from low 40s to high 60s, it’s hard to predict what type of weather runners can expect. “Texas is known for heat and humidity,” Juris says. “In November, we can have cool temps and low humidity or a bit of hot stuff. You never really know what you are going to get.” While the weather is anyone’s guess, the South Regional is certain to be extremely competitive and challenging.

The day before the race, runners can inspect the course and get a feel for the conditions. On race day, the events kick off with a boys’ open 5K race and a girls’ open 5K race. A boys’/girls’ short course 3K race follows and leads up to the 5K championship races.

“The South Regional is set up to be friendly in all areas, except between the start and the finish line,” Juris states. “This event has a Texas-swag to it, and with NXN berths on the line, everyone means business.”

Ready to compete against the best cross-country runners in the nation? Nike Cross Nationals is your opportunity.

The 2013 Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) nationals-qualifying events continue in Mesa, Arizona on 11/23/2013. The Southwest Regional lets high school cross-country runners from Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada race for a chance to compete at this year’s National Final, held in Portland, OR on 12/07/2013.

Southwest Regional takes place at Toka Sticks Golf Course, a 100% grass course. “It’s flat and fast,” says Jeff Guy, the Midwest Regional meet director. “It’s not a loop course so there’s no path athletes run twice. And the weather is perfect – it’s unbelievable.”

The day before the race, runners have the opportunity to walk thru the course, shop for Nike Cross Nationals gear, and attend the Southwest Regional’s press conference that highlights the elite individual runners and teams competing. Afterwards, runners can participate in the traditional t-shirt exchange and meet a professional Nike athlete. “The t-shirt exchange is huge,” Jeff states. “Athletes exchange their school’s t-shirt with t-shirt’s from athletes on different teams. It’s a lot of fun and almost becomes like a bidding war. It gets runners from different teams talking and is a great icebreaker.”

Race day kicks off with a citizen’s race and other open races. Then, the focus switches to the boys’ and girls’ championship races. To make the race even more memorable for runners, the finish line has a Southwest Regional hall-of-fame touch. “The finish line is lined with state flags of each of the five states represented,” Jeff says. “And each flag lists the winning individuals and teams from the past. It’s a cool presence.”

The Southwest Regional is the only NXR event that has ties with Wings of America, an organization that works to enhance the quality of life for American Indian youth. “This allows Native American runners to qualify for the USATF Cross-Country Championship’s National Meet without having to necessarily be competing in a championship race,” Jeff explains. “Qualifying is determined by time and the top runners advance to the Final.”
