Earlier this month the Wolf Grey colorway of the Nike Air Max Penny arrived and we mentioned how it seems to be one of the few sneakers that always seems to be popular model no matter what colorway is applied. That theory is ready to be put to the test once again, as Nike has brought out a new colorway of the popular Penny shoe just in time for the summer.
This time around the Nike Air Max Penny one is doused in a monochromatic color scheme of Black, Dark Grey and White. With a simple color scheme like this, on an iconic shoe worn by a player like Penny Hardaway, you can’t really go wrong. A visible Air Max Unit in the heel, the timeless 1 Cent Penny logo on the heel, and the trademark marbleized Swoosh, this Nike Air Max Penny will be a welcomed addition to any collection.

Penny Hardaway has been away from the game for a few years now (minus of course his desire to play again for the Heat this season). Penny may not be on the NBA courts but his footwear continues to make appearances in our Sneaker Watch coverage thanks to retro colorways like the Club Purple Suns version and today’s new release, the Wolf Grey colorway.
The Nike Air Max Penny is a shoe that has hovered near the top of the list for most sneaker collectors. It seems to be one of the few silhouettes that, even when Nike ventures outside of the standard team inspired colors, still continues to look like a million bucks. The Max Air unit in the heel, the clear plastic Swoosh, and the unmistakeable Penny Hardaway logo on the heel make this sneaker nothing short of a classic.

Earlier this week, in our Eastbay Memory Lane post, we took a look back at the original Nike Air Penny and the original Air Flight One. There is no arguing that the Nike Air Max Penny is a classic shoe, especially in the Orlando Magic-inspired colorway that Hardaway had one of his best seasons ever while wearing.
Although it originally released in 1995, the popularity of the Air Max Penny seems to have never lost a step no matter how many times over it has been retroed. Like the Royal Foamposites, or any other Penny signature model for that matter, it seems that if Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway wore it on the court during his Orlando Magic days, it became a classic. Of course, fans of Penny and his shoes will also never forget the “Lil Penny” advertising campaigns that went along with the iconic signature shoes.
You can now get the original Orlando Magic-inspired colorway of Black, Varsity Royal and White for the first time since 2007.

Very few signature sneaker lines have been created that found success over years, many are short lived or outlive their popularity and fall into the discount bins as has beens after a couple of model years. The Jordan shoe line is easily the longest running signature line but most would agree not every model over the years has been up to expectations. If there is one person whose signature sneaker line could be tossed in the ring against Michael Jordan and actually hold its own, it is the Penny Hardaway line. Penny’s signature line is short in numbers compared to the Jordan line but it seems like every model, and nearly every colorway finds success from the Foamposite models to the recent 1/2 Cent hybrid model.
Next month, on January 14th Nike will release a new colorway of the classic Nike Air Max Penny. While the original colorway in Black, White and Varsity Royal of the first Penny signature to carry his name will retro in the spring, this colorway will pay tribute to the second team that Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway played with in his career. The Air Max Penny I receives a Black and Club Purple color combo with hints of Bright Mandarin. The combination will likely give visions of no-look passes and high-flying dunks for fans of Penny Hardaway and although his career on the court may have been cut short due to injuries, there isn’t anything that could take away from his legacy in the sneaker culture.
Available January 14th at Eastbay.
