Nike Air Griffey Max II “Fresh Water”

There is no question that Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the most well-liked athletes in Major League Baseball history. It’s even safe to say that he is probably one of the most well liked athletes, period. Even when it comes to his signature sneaker line, you’d have a hard time finding too many people that enjoyed seeing “The Kid” crushing home runs, with his hat turned backwards at one of the many Home Run Derby contests he competed in, that would deny Junior’s likableness. For those that saw his picturesque swing transform from one of the most beautiful things to ever grace the batter’s box, into one of iconic and unforgettable Swingman logo that carried his signature line, the return of the Fresh Water Griffey Max II has been a very long time coming.

The Nike Air Griffey Max II is highlighted by the unmistakeable Swingman logo that resides on the heel. Two Max Air units, one in the heel and one in the forefoot, provide cushioning for this timeless silhouette. A turf-inspired tread pattern sits below, designed for providing Junior traction back in his days tracking down fly balls on the turf of the Seattle Kingdome. While up top, the Fresh Water colorway that matched those turquoise Mariners jerseys so perfectly.

Ken Griffey Jr.’s second signature shoe, the Nike Air Max Griffey II, will return as a Retro this summer in a number of colorways. The Kid’s second model returns first in this newly available white and orange colorway. Although the colorway may not be one of the original colorways that was created for the former Seattle Mariners star, Nike Training has been kind with the color palette when it comes to bringing back Junior’s signature models.

The Air Griffey Max II features a “Uniform of Summer”-inspired white base with touches of orange and grey. Like the original Air Griffey Max, forefoot and heel Max Air cushioning take up residence in the midsole. The Griffey Max II proudly displays the iconic Swingman logo on the heel, which pays tribute to what many would say is one of the most beautiful swings baseball has ever seen. While this colorway may not be the popular Fresh Water colorway that will return later this year, the combination could easily take up a spot in many collectors’ summer rotations.

This year Ken Griffey Jr. decided to hang up the cleats for good. The Kid’s legendary career was illustrious on all accounts. You could say he was in large part responsible for the boom in popularity of fitted hats throughout the mid-nineties that continues on today but nobody can argue his influence on baseball specific footwear.

While Nike re-released the Air Griffey Max in a number of colorways over the last year or so, some would say his best shoe was his second signature. The Griffey Max 2 was Nike’s reward to Jr. in 1998 after his best season on the baseball diamond. Next spring the Nike Air Griffey Max 2 will return in the original Black and Emerald colorway to Eastbay.

For now though, hopefully this wallpaper will keep The Kid’s fans satisfied.
