Did you know that more records have been set on The Armory’s track than any other track in the world?
A historic venue, a beautiful city, the most talented high school runners in the world — what more could you ask for? The stage is set for another historic weekend here in New York as The 2018 New Balance Nationals Indoor gets underway.
With athletes like Arria Minor, a top overall sprinter who will be competing in the 200m and 400m, Lanae-Tava Thomas, the number one female long jump athlete, and Brendon Stewart, the top ranked male in the 60m — the battle to be named an All-American will be intense and plenty of new records will be set.
Make sure to follow along with this blog and on our social channels all weekend long for up-to-date content and photo slideshows.
And if you’re at The Armory competing or cheering racers on this weekend, stop by our Eastbay Experience near the awards area to learn more about us, check out some great New Balance gear, and pick up some Eastbay swag. Best of luck to all competing this weekend!
Friday, March 9
As our team arrived at The Armory this morning and made our way to the Eastbay Experience to set up for the day ahead, you could feel the excitement in the air.
NSAF and New Balance staff members made the final touches to the track and the set-up surrounding it as the early arrivers for the morning events began to check in on the first floor. By 9 AM, all systems were a go in the historic Armory building, signified by the firing of the starting pistol and the thunderous noise of runners on the track.
Check out our slideshow of Friday’s action below:
This weekend, the greatest high school track & field athletes are gathering at Aggie Stadium in Greensboro, North Carolina for an epic showdown. New Balance Nationals Outdoor 2017 will highlight the country’s best talent, and before the weekend is through, the strongest and fastest will be crowned All-American.
Eastbay will be trackside for the entire weekend’s heats, and we’re not coming empty handed. Stop by our tent and get customized bag tags for your exclusive #NBNationals backpack. Or celebrate your win by snapping a few pictures in front of our photo wall. We’ll even have some must-have New Balance swag for sale. And trust us, you don’t want to miss out.
At Eastbay, the most important thing to us is helping you reach your track & field goals. That’s why we can’t wait to see which records are broken and who will be crowned champion of each event. We also can’t wait to hear your stories and learn more about your journey to New Balance Nationals.
Do you have what it takes to win it all? Show us.
Traffic in Manhattan is always hairy, but if you venture towards Fort Washington Avenue this weekend, there’s another peril….runners. As you draw closer to the Armory, you’ll face hoards of them, jogging or running strides, alone or in groups, warming up or cooling down. That’s because this is the weekend of New Balance Nationals Indoor, and the best high school track & field athletes in the nation are gathering at the Armory to battle for the title of All-American. Eastbay is here too, soaking up the sights and sounds of the meet.
And trust me, there are plenty of sounds. Right now, I’m writing this squeezed into a bleacher seat on the fourth floor overlooking the track. I can barely hear myself think through these words as I type them. Why? Because Olympian Sydney McLaughlin is running her first heat and this crowd is bringing down the house.
New Balance Nationals is a MAJOR sporting event, and no one in this building will hear you say otherwise. If they can hear you say anything at all, that is. Between the constant BANG of the starting pistol (today is filled with LOTS of sprint heats), the clapping, screaming, and cheering, the excitement within the Armory is palpable. You can’t just hear it — you can feel it and see it everywhere you look.
You can see it in the competitors. Yesterday, a coach animatedly discussed strategy with his pole vaulter between rounds of competition. For obvious reasons, I couldn’t hear his advice, but everything I needed to know was in his gestures. And his athlete’s response to them. She had a laser focus on all his movements, never flinching or breaking eye contact, despite the noise and action surrounding her. As soon as she finished a vault, she bee-lined back for more encouragement and advice.
You can feel it in the downtime between heats. When these athletes walk into the Eastbay Experience, their energy is contagious.
Celebrating with our photo wall, entering for a chance to win an Eastbay Gift Card, flipping through our catalog featuring Olympic sprinter Trayvon Bromell, or creating customized bag tags for their New Balance Nationals-exclusive backpacks only adds to the fun.
We’re getting caught up in all the action too. It’s taken me way too long to write this for you, because I can’t tear my eyes away from the track. Currently, boys’ pole vault is going for a national record. If you’re watching too, from the event itself, or from an online stream, I’m sure you know how I feel. We’re all gasping and cheering through every jump.
AND THERE IT GOES. A new World Junior Record. That’s one way to reach new heights. 19’1” to be exact.
When you toe the line at The Armory in New York City, you do so alongside the greatest high school runners in the nation. Your jumps need to be higher and longer than ever before, and you need power behind every throw. You need to be the best.
Athletes like Sydney McLaughlin, Olympic hurdler in her senior year at Union Catholic High School, and DJ Principe, who continues to flirt with the sub-four-minute mile, will be battling for the title of All-American.
Who will come out on top?
At Eastbay, we’re not just dedicated to helping you prepare for greatness, we’re dedicated to helping you see it through. That’s why we’re proud to be part of New Balance Nationals, cheering you on trackside as you pursue your goals.
If you’re at The Armory competing this weekend, stop by our Eastbay Experience near the awards area to learn more about us, grab some great New Balance gear, and fill us in on your journey to New Balance Nationals. Good luck this weekend! We can’t wait to hear your stories.
Every year, the best high school track & field athletes gather to compete for the title of All-American. This year, it’s going down at The Armory in New York City from March 11-13.
Attending New Balance Nationals is a badge of honor marking you as one of track & field’s elite. They run the fastest, throw the farthest, jump the highest. Whatever the event — these are the most talented athletes in the country.
Year after year, records are shattered at New Balance Nationals, making The Armory one of the fastest tracks in the nation. Since the 1920s, the Armory has been New York’s premier track & field center. It hosts over 100 meets a year and is home to after-school activities and college prep courses for high school students across the city.
Eastbay is getting in on the fastest party in town, and will be at The Armory to meet and cheer on the athletes. And we’re not showing up empty handed. We’re bringing along two different ways for participants to score free gear: the Scan And Score Challenge and the Daily Gear Grab Sweepstakes.
And just how can athletes win this awesome gear? They’ll have to head to the fourth floor of The Armory to find out. Or they can beat the rush and pre-register to play at eastbayreg.com.
