Memphis fans believe.
words // Nick Engvall
There is no doubt that fans can bring an energy to the arena to carry a team passed their opponents. Memphis is a city that is filled with those dedicated fans. Tuesday they arrived and were equipped with yellow “believe memphis” rally rags to help cheer on the Grizzlies who have surprised the Oklahoma City Thunder thus far and were up 2 games to 1.
Unfortunately for Memphis and their fans, despite some last minute heroics at the the end of regulation from Mike Conley, then by Greivis Vasquez in the 1st overtime, and again in the 2nd overtime by Marc Gasol, they fell to the Thunder in the third overtime. It was a game that those who watched, whether fans of either team or not, will remember for a long time. For Memphis, O.J. Mayo and Mike Conley both fouled out in the 1st overtime. Led by Zach Randolph with 34 points and and 16 rebounds, and Marc Gasol, who put in 26 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, it looked as if the Grizzlies couldn’t lose. However, Russell Westbrook’s 40 points and Kevin Durant’s 35 points, including 6 in the final overtime, were just too much for the short-handed Memphis team.
In the early game Monday, the Boston Celtics looked to get even with the Miami Heat. With Rajon Rondo playing through a gruesome elbow injury, the Celtics also hoped to use their home court advantage. However, the Celtics offense faltered at the end of regulation and Paul Pierce couldn’t get a decent shot off. In overtime, LeBron, Wade and Bosh scored all 12 of the Miami points and carried the Heat to a 98-90 victory. LeBron James finished with 35 points and 14 boards, Wade scored 28 points, and Bosh finished with 20 points and 12 boards.
