The Major League Baseball All Star Game has become much more than just the game in the past couple of decades. Instead of the one and done game between baseball’s best, there is now a number of other events that take place alongside the actual All Star Game to ensure that fans young and old are entertained for the entire All Star break.
One of the fan favorites is the Home Run Derby, where the top sluggers get to show off their power at the plate. This year’s Derby took place Monday night in Anaheim, where the All Star festivities are being hosted this year, took center stage with Matt Holliday, Corey Hart, Miguel Cabrera, Hanley Ramirez, and David Ortiz all putting on a show. Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals blasted a 497 foot shot in the first round, but only managed 4 more in the contest, and couldn’t make it out of the round. Baseball’s hottest big swinger, Corey Hart of the Milwaukee Brewers, blasted 13 in the first round but couldn’t back up his first round performance and was eliminated. Moving into the final round it was David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox and Hanley Ramirez of the Florida Marlins.
David Ortiz blasted 11 in the final round, to tie the final round record, and secure this year’s victory. Be sure to catch the 2010 MLB All Star Game Tuesday at 8 PM EST on Fox.
