Inside The Combine: Glenn Gronkowski

Glenn Gronkowski

Let’s get this out of the way first. Yes, this is the youngest Gronkowski brother, and yes, he has a similar fun, big-time personality. But Kansas State fullback Glenn Gronkowski wants NFL teams to know he’s ready to step out of his siblings’ shadows and build a legacy of his own.

For Gronkowski, the combine has been a long time coming. “Well, my three older brothers were in the league when I was in high school,” he said. “So I thought it was a possibility. Obviously, it still had to come through. It’s always been my dream, and to be here is awesome.”

To make his dream a reality, the 22-year-old had to work hard. Leading up to the combine, he has focused most on upping his speed and strength.

“To get faster, I did a lot of 40 starts,” Gronkowski said. “Our warm-up is an hour long and it activates all of those muscles, gets your blood going, and gets you ready to go.”
Those drills helped him run a 4.71 40-yard dash, a great time for a fullback.

When it came to improving his bench press, he focused on building up his endurance. “I didn’t do a lot of heavy weight workouts,” he said. “It was more about band resistance. It really wasn’t about reps. It was about holding for periods of time and building endurance.”

With that workout plan, he was able to bench 225 a solid 17 times.

Now that he’s posted good scores, what types of skills will he bring to a pro team?

“I can be a downhill blocker and also a receiver,” Gronkowski said. “I’m not just a traditional fullback that just blocks. I can be more of an H-back — doing everything.”

So, take note NFL teams, if you draft Glenn Gronkowski, you are getting a lot more than just “Little Gronk.” You’re getting a versatile, talented player in his own right, and he’s ready to prove his worth.
