Live from Anaheim, Cal., the first-ever #EastbayFunkDunk competition is going down today at 12:15 PST, and you don’t want to miss it. The world’s best dunkers will be competing for a $10,000 prize in three jaw-dropping, action-packed rounds. You can live stream this non-stop, dunktacular thrill ride at eastbay.com/funkdunk.
Don’t worry, you’ll be able to display your slam-dunking skills; we’re running a Funk Dunk contest so you can play, too! Here’s how it works: We’ll give you two weeks to send us your own personalized version of the Eastbay Funk Dunk in a 15-second video via Twitter or Instagram. The more creative the dunk, the better. However, you’ll need at least an 8-foot hoop or taller to qualify. Then, we’ll pick our five favorite dunks. From there, we’ll let our followers vote for the winner, who will then win basketball shoes for his or her entire squad!
Today kicks off with Open Gym Premier’s Halloween Classic tournament, presented by Ballislife, at 9 am PST, followed by the Funk Dunk competition. Once the champ is crowned, we’ll open up the Funk Dunk contest so you can show us your stuff! We’ll give you until 11/7 to send us your video, where the winner will be chosen by you, our fans, on 11/16.
Here are today’s dunkers and some of the jams they bring to the table:
In the summer of ’94, when MJ was playing baseball, Converse was known for basketball, and the NBA’s dunk contest was losing its mystique, Isaiah “J.R.” Rider brought us the now-legendary East Bay Funk Dunk and rejuvenated the dunk scene. At a time when innovative dunks were seemingly exhausted and the great ones often recycled, Rider’s emphatic between-the-legs slam was cited by Charles Barkley as the best dunk he had ever seen. Check it out: “Charles Barkley, what do you think?”
Yes, Charles, it was awesome. Since then, variations of the East Bay Funk Dunk have been used by superstars like Kobe Bryant, Vince Carter, and Jason Richardson to win dunk competitions. And the rest is history.
In honor of that historic dunk over 20 years ago, Eastbay will be hosting the Eastbay Funk Dunk contest at The American Sports Center in Anaheim, Cal., on Oct. 24. From coast to coast and around the globe, eight of the best dunkers in the world will compete to take home a $10,000 first place prize. Two teams made up of different-style dunkers will strategize and compete in three rounds of a never-before-seen revolutionary dunk contest — and the winner takes all.
How It Works
There will be three jaw-dropping rounds, all judged by the Funk Dunk king J.R. Rider.
Round 1 – Freestyle: Five minutes of rapid fire dunks.
Round 2 – D.U.N.K.: The dunking version of H.O.R.S.E.
Round 3 – All East Bay Funk Dunks: Props are allowed (and encouraged).
There are two teams of four dunkers, consisting of U.S.-based members and international phenoms.
Team One: Guy Dupuy, Kenny Dobbs, Porter Maberry, Michael Purdie.
Team Two: John Clark, Issac White, Rafal Lipinski, Justin Darlington.
These guys can dunk blindfolded over three people, do cartwheel dunks, and even dunk over multiple cars. It’s going to be wild. Here’s a small taste of what they can do:
You can get more details and stream the whole event at www.eastbay.com/funkdunk, starting at 12:15 pm PST. It’s going to be fun, so do not miss it. It all goes down during The Open Gym Premier’s Halloween Classic Tournament in Anaheim on Oct. 24. Make a note, mark your calendar, and set a reminder!
Also releasing this month from Nike Sportswear is this all new spring-ready colorway of the classic Dunk High.
The much-loved Nike Dunk High makes its return in a combination of premium leather and canvas, sitting above a traditional Nike Dunk tooling. A combination of hyper red and team red come together on these, topped with hits of neutral grey and white accenting throughout.
This all new colorway is among the latest Nike Dunks now available here at Eastbay.
While the Swoosh’s innovative Nike Basketball shoes continue to take over the game, the classic like the Nike Dunk High are still going strong here at Eastbay.
The classic silhouette by Nike arrives in a traditional build, utilizing premium leather and nylon to bring their timeless look to life. White tumbled leather is seen building most of the upper on the Dunk High, while nylon sparks that classic feel on the tongue. Black leather handles the Swoosh, matching the white/black Nike Dunk tooling sitting below.
