After dropping the first domino in rookie sneaker deals earlier this month by signing Charlotte Bobcats rookie Kemba Walker to a multi-year endorsement deal, Under Armour continues to bolster their growing roster, announcing today that they’ve also signed second-overall draft pick Derrick Williams to a multi-year deal a well.

Williams, who was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves, was the 2011 Pac-10 Player of the Year. The 6-foot-8 forward, declared for the NBA draft after his sophomore season at Arizona, averaging 19.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and shooting 56 percent from 3-point range to lead the Wildcats to the 2011 NCAA tournament Elite 8.

“Derrick had a terrific college career and emerged as an absolute force on the sport’s biggest stage,” said Matt Mirchin, Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing, Under Armour.  “We love Derrick’s passion and hunger to play better every time he steps on the court. He’s a great representation for the Under Armour brand and a terrific example to all young basketball players who are dedicated to becoming game-changers.”

Williams followed up his Pac-10 Freshman of the Year campaign in 2010 by elevating his game as a sophomore. He was a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award and a second-team All-American selection. Earning him recognition on a national level was his play in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, where he led the Wildcats to the Elite 8 with a 32-point, 13-rebound performance in the regional finals.

“It’s exciting to join a young brand that brings such a strong, new voice and look to the game,” said Williams. “Under Armour is a great fit for me because they are just as passionate as I am about working hard and striving to be the best.”

With their newest acquisition, the Under Armour Basketball roster now includes Williams, Walker, Brandon Jennings and Greivis Vasquez. After landing two big fishes (and continuing to work on more) from this year’s incoming rookie class, do you think Under Armour is ready to mix it up with the larger brands in the basketball category? Arizona’s Derrick Williams may only be a sophomore but there is no question that he leads the charge for the Wildcats. The Southern California native averaged more than double the points of his closest teammate this year. At 6 foot, 8 inches and 240 pounds, he’s a post-up threat with quickness that most big men can’t keep up with. To throw another difficulty at opponents, Williams, although he doesn’t shoot near as frequently from outside, is deadly from behind the 3-point line, shooting 58% on the season.

In the first two games of the NCAA Tournament he has proven why he is one of the top prospects in the upcoming NBA Draft. The 2011 PAC-10 Player of the Year hit a 3-pointer late in the game and then came up with a huge block in what would have been the game-tying shot. In Arizona’s 2nd game of the tournament Williams again came to the rescue of the Wildcats. He scored an unbelievable shot as he was fouled with just 10 seconds remaining and then put in the go ahead point with a free throw to beat Texas.

Williams scored a career high 32 as the Arizona Wildcats knocked off the defending champion Duke Blue Devils on Thursday giving them their first Elite 8 birth since 2005, and bringing one step closer to the school’s 2nd national title.
