The Dallas Mavericks added NBA Championship to their franchise history, while the Miami Heat added more questions to their choice of bringing the “Big 3” of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh together.

The Mavs, behind Jason Terry’s 27 points, defeated the Miami Heat in Game 6 105-95. Dirk Nowitzki struggled early but came back in the fourth quarter, like he has nearly every game, and finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Nowitzki was awarded the Finals MVP award but it was his supporting cast that gave the Mavericks the victory, Shawn Marion, Jason Terry, Tyson Chandler, Ian Mahinmi, J.J. Barea and DeShawn Stevenson all had steals in a defensive effort that essentially stifled the Miami Heat.

For the Heat, the critics will have more fire power in their questioning of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh for making such a big deal of their choice to play in Miami. LeBron finished with 21 points, Bosh had 19 and Wade finished with 17 in the loss.

The Dallas Mavericks had some sort of fever last night. It wasn’t Dirk, like it was in Game 4. It wasn’t Justin Bieber, or even Lil Wayne, who were both spotted enjoying the game. The Mavs over-heating was all from behind the 3-point line in Game 5. The team shot almost 69% from long distance Wednesday, hitting 13 of the 19 shots they took from 3-point range. With just one more they would have tied the NBA Finals record.

Dirk Nowitzki led with 29 points but Jason Kidd, J.J. Barea, and Jason Terry all were on fire from long range as the Mavs had their best scoring output of the series. Since Game 5 was the last game in Dallas, the Mavericks and their fans made the most of what could easily be considered the best season in franchise history.

With all eyes on LeBron, thanks to his poor outing in Game 4, James responded with a triple double. However, 17 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists couldn’t keep up with Dallas. Even with Dwyane Wade scoring 23 points and Chris Bosh adding 19 points and 10 rebounds the Miami Heat are now on the brink of elimination.

LeBron James struggled in Game 4, can the Heat recover?LeBron James struggled to find himself in Game 4, can the Heat recover?

words // Nick Engvall

LeBron James has been under heavy criticism and watchful eyes since he was about 10 years old. Regardless, with an 8 point scoring outing, and zero points in the fourth quarter of an NBA Finals game, James’ performance last night is begging for criticism. In 90 career post season games, Tuesday was the first time LeBron didn’t score in double digits.

In a game in which LeBron played like he had the flu, it was actually Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki that played through a 101 degree fever. Nowitzki somehow managed to 39 minutes and score 21 points and grab 11 rebounds to lead the Mavericks to a 86-83 victory. Jason Terry scored 17 points, Tyson Chandler added 13 points and 16 rebounds, and Shawn Marion put in 16 in a balanced attack that may have the critics silenced, at least temporarily, regarding Dallas’s toughness.

Although LeBron’s lack of play was the most noticed part of the Heat’s game, Dwyane Wade did his part to help carry the team, scoring 32 points and coming up with 2 big blocks down the stretch. Chris Bosh added 24 points but with just 2/3rds of the ‘Big 3’ the series now sits at a 2-2 lock.

Miami looked like they were going to walk away with a blowout victory and a two game lead but someone forgot to tell them the game is 48 minutes long and not just the 41 they played hard in. Dwyane Wade scored 36 points, but after a 3-pointer with just over 7 minutes to go in the game, he and the Miami Heat went cold.

Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry led the Mavs on a 17-2 run to come from behind and tie the series at 1 game each. Dirk finished with 24 points and 11 rebounds, despite the injured finger on his left hand. Jason Terry added 16 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter, and Shawn Marion dropped in 20, as the Mavs won 95-93. The series continues Sunday in Dallas.

The Miami Heat continued their recent hot streak in the opening game of the NBA Finals. Miami’s smothering defense held Dirk Nowitzki to 27 points on 7-18 shooting, and shutting down the bench of the Dallas Mavericks as well.

Offensively LeBron James put up 24 points, Dwyane Wade added 22 points, and Chris Bosh scored 19 points. With the Game 1 victory the Big 3 move to within 3 wins of the NBA Title that brought them all to South Beach in the first place. LeBron James added 9 rebounds and 5 assists, Bosh grabbed 9 rebounds, and Wade added 10 boards, 6 assists and 2 blocked shots in the 92-84 win.

Nowitzki’s injured finger on his off hand may have been cause for concern for Dallas and their fans, but the Miami defense down the stretch should be the real concern for the Mavericks. Dallas was held to just 37% from the field, despite holding the Heat to 39% shooting. Miami, with home court advantage in this series, have yet to lose at home in the postseason, and it doesn’t look like they plan to do so anytime soon.
