Adidas has made it perfectly clear in the past that “Fast Don’t Lie,” but what about light? This year marked the introduction of the lightest basketball shoe ever created, the adidas adiZero Crazy Light. Tipping the scales at just 9.8 ounces, the revolutionary model set a new standard for lightweight basketball performance through innovative engineering. A welded SprintWeb and SprintFrame upper makes for a lightweight, but stable experience, while an EVA cushioned midsole and rubber outsole with a variable height engineered traction pattern supports the ride below. Before we turn the calendars on 2011, two new colorways of the Crazy Light can be yours today.

First up is a pair that could conceivably be worn by reigning MVP and adidas Basketball athlete Derrick Rose. The shoe sports a white synthetic upper with black accenting the laces, inner lining and external heel counter. Red complements the look on the pinline, 3-Stripe branding and midsole, while a grey outsole caps off the look below.

Additionally, there’s an eye-catching TRON-like colorway that provides blue and cyan color pops on a black based shoe. Both new adidas Basketball shoes are available at Eastbay today.

As you’d expect, no NBA player is having more fun this summer than Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, who is currently on tour with adidas Basketball over in China. Before making an initial stop in Beijing, Dwight took part in the adidas Crazy Light Challenge event at Roppongi Hills in Tokyo, Japan this past Wednesday.

Decked out in a clown wig, adidas TechFit gear and “Sharp Blue” adidas adiZero Crazy Light shoes, Dwight ran through several drills with guests in attendance, helping them fine tune their games. Things became really interesting when Dwight also hosted a mini dunk competition, which somehow resulted in him dunking on a 12-foot giraffe. Not a real giraffe of course, but that didn’t make it any less unexpected.

Interested in picking up a pair of the shoes Dwight wore to dunk on the giraffe? The adidas adiZero Crazy Light is available in “Sharp Blue” and several other colorways over at Eastbay today.

adidas Unveils The adiZero Crazy Light

via Press Release

After much anticipation, adidas has officially unveiled their newest basketball shoe, the adiZero Crazy Light. Weighing in at an unbelievable 9.8 ounces, the Crazy Light is being touted as the lightest basketball shoe on the market by more than 15% over the next lightest shoe. With the introduction of the Crazy Light, adidas now has the lightest footwear in three sports, including football (adiZero 5-Star cleat) and soccer (F50 adiZero cleat).

To construct the Crazy Light, the adidas Basketball Design Team started building from scratch, as opposed to stripping down an existing concept. Only the lightest and most durable materials were used in the shoe’s development, which started over 2 years ago. Adidas also received input from the fastest player in the NBA, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose, who will be wearing the Crazy Light during the NBA Playoffs.

“Lighter footwear makes you faster and speed dominates on the basketball court,” said Rose, “The adiZero Crazy Light is the lightest basketball shoe I’ve ever worn and it will no doubt make me faster on the court for our playoff run.”

Technology incorporated into the Crazy Light starts with the revolutionary new SPRINTWEB exoskeleton upper. SPRINTWEB is less than 1mm thick and is seamlessly bonded to a nylon base for weight reduction and added support. The web layout provides players with vertical and horizontal strength, which comes in handy when making cuts.

The SPRINTFRAME heel counter and TORSION SYSTEM are fused together to reduce weight, increase energy return and improve motion control. The eyelets are load bearing and have corresponding web spars to enhance support. Translucent nylon is used for the upper’s build, once again decreasing weight and giving players 360-degree ventilation.

For traction, a varied engineered thickness was employed to ensure maximum grip in high wear perimeter zones, and less thickness and weight in low perimeter zones like the midfoot. It also features longitudinal grooves in the heel and forefoot to provide support during extreme cuts.

“No other basketball shoe compares to the new adiZero Crazy Light and it’s a shoe that will revolutionize the game,” said Lawrence Norman, adidas Vice President of Global Basketball. “The ultra lightweight design is built for players who want to be faster, jump higher and perform better on the court. From the NBA’s best to pick-up games across the world, players are asking for light footwear to help them become one step quicker – and the adiZero Crazy Light delivers this in a way like no shoe in history.”

Officially set to launch on June 3rd, you will have an exclusive opportunity to pre-order your pair tomorrow morning at Eastbay. Four different colorways will be available, including Sharp Blue/White, Derrick Rose’s Black/Red/White, Lead/White/Electricity and Red/White. Retail is $130.00.
