Colorado Rapids Make Their Own Luck in MLS Cup

The 2010 MLS Cup didn’t turn out to be the epic cross country battle between the Los Angeles Galaxy and the New York Red Bulls. There was no Landon Donovan, no David Beckham, and no Tierry Henry or Rafa Marquez in Sunday’s championship match. There were however two teams that provided some of the most well matched and entertaining soccer the MLS has seen all season.

FC Dallas was able to get on the scoreboard first behind a goal from the season’s MVP, David Ferreira. Ferreira scored in the 35th minute on a cross from Marvin Chavez, just barely beating the Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens to the ball. With that Dallas took the lead into halftime. Colorado’s Conor Casey tied the match with a goal in the 57th minute, which played a big part in him being named MVP of the match. It wasn’t until overtime that the gridlocked scoreboard would be changed again.

In a play which started with a long pass from Conor Casey, Rapids substitute Macoumba Kandji played the ball towards the goal from the corner. In a seemingly impossible sequence of events, Kandji forced the ball through his defender’s legs and lunged towards the ball lifting the ball towards the goal and keeper Kevin Hartman. Defender George John stepped in between and the ball caromed off his leg, over Hartman and into the net for an own goal. Kandji lie in the ground in pain from a sprain knee which occurred from his efforts, while his teammates gathered around him to celebrate what would ultimately be the game winning goal.
