Nobody said it would be easy, and though Team USA coasted in the early stages of Sunday’s Barcelona exhibition, Argentina showed us exactly why they’re the world’s third ranked FIBA team. Despite trailing the United States by 15 points after the first quarter, the Argentines rallied for advantages in two of the remaining three quarters. However, game MVP Kevin Durant came up with timely buckets late in the fourth to help the Americans hold on to a slim 86-80 victory.

Durant scored 27 points in the game after knocking down 7-of-11 3-point attempts. Kobe Bryant added 18 points, while LeBron James rolled out his usual triple-threat stat line with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Manu Ginobili scored 23 to lead the way for Argentina.

Next up for the United States is rival Spain tomorrow afternoon.

Though they were tested like the Dream Team never was, Team USA celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the ’92 team’s dominance in Barcelona by wearing throwback jerseys. Check out the Dream Team kits and USA-themed kicks in this special edition of Sneaker Watch.

World Cup Watch: Germany & Spain Prevail

In what many thought would be one of the most competitive matches of the 2010 World Cup, Germany dissected Argentina’s defense with precision attacking to hand Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi and team what could only be described as a humiliating defeat. The constant back and forth of trash talking built up the excitement in the days prior, but it seemed that only the German team came prepared to back up their words, scoring four times against the Argentinian team.

Miroslav Klose once again led Germany, this time scoring two goals, one at the 68th minute and a second as the final blow at the 89th minute to give the Germany their dominating 4th goal against scoreless Argentina.

The Germans will face Spain who narrowly defeated Paraguay 1-0. After penalties erased goals for each side around the 60 minute mark, David Villa, the star of the tournament for Spain this year had an opportunity to put the Spaniards ahead. Villa used as much of the goal post as he possible could, bouncing a shot off the right side post, sending it bouncing off the left post and into the back of the net. The only goal that counted was the only goal that Spain needed as Paraguay couldn’t muster much offense from that point on.

The Germany versus Spain match will take place July 7th at 2:30 PM EST in South Africa, the winner will face the winner of Tuesday’s Uruguay versus Netherlands match.

World Cup Watch: Hat Trick for Gonzalo Higuain

words_Nick Engvall

It only took Argentina 17 minutes to score, but it wasn’t an Argentinian player that scored first. Park Chu-Young of South Korea deflected in a free kick from superstar Lionel Messi to give Argentina an early lead that they would not relinquish. Argentina leaped to a 2-0 lead thanks to the first goal of the match from Gonzalo Higuain, a header put just out of the reach of the keeper’s fingertips.

Aside from a slight defensive lapse just before the half that allowed Lee Chung-Yong an easy goal, Argentina never slipped up. It was all about Gonzalo Higuain, who added a goal at 76 minutes, then again at 80 minutes to grab the first hat trick of this year’s World Cup. Higuain was in the right place at the right time when a rebound of one of Messi’s shots came off the goal post and left him with no place to put the ball but the back of the net. His third goal came four minutes later, again after Messi run on the goal which finished with Gonzalo crossing the goal keeper with another header.

Not only did Higuain’s three goals mark the first hat trick of the tournament, the 4-1 finish is the highest scoring match during group competitive play thus far.
