It’s been more than four years since we last saw Stephon Marbury on the NBA hardwood. After his reputation plunged stateside (maybe even unfairly), the man they call ‘Starbury’ took his game to China, where he’s restored his image and even become a Chinese Basketball Association champion.
Prior to relocating, Marbury made an impact on the stateside basketball footwear industry. Before launching his own low-priced Starbury brand in 2006, he spent most of his career wearing streetwear-focused brand AND1. His rookie sneaker in 1996 was the Stephon Marbury Mid, highlighted in today’s Eastbay Memory Lane.
Seen in two colorways, the Marbury Mid was a fairly bulky effort that featured a full-grain leather upper, reflective piping, an ‘S’ logo on the heel, AND1’s player embroidered on the lateral ankle, a molded EVA mid-Soul (see the play on words?) and a high density rubber outsole (and again!).
The Marbury Mid hasn’t been re-released since its initial drop, but does have somewhat of a cult following. I can personally tell you that the model was one of my school shoes that year and I wouldn’t mind seeing some kind of retro release for nostalgia purposes. Anybody else have fond memories of Marbury’s debut sig?
