In late 1996, when this version of the Nike Air Max Uptempo released, it was easily one of the most mind boggling styles to ever come out from Nike Basketball. This version was the first to feature the three-quarter-length Air Max unit, a necessary step that helped technology in the Nike Basketball line develop into the full-length Air units that make their way into shoes like the Nike Air Max LeBron VII. Details like the exaggerated “Air” tag on the ankle and the TPU jewel-like teardrop shapes on the side, combined with the largest and most eye-catching Air Unit to make its way on to basketball courts, turned heads to say the least.

The original colorway of White/Black-College Navy already released earlier this summer, and now a second colorway will begin shipping soon. The latest is a combination of Black and Metallic Silver, which has been subtly accented with a hint of red on the heel pull and the bottom side of the Air Unit.

Back in 1997 the Air Max Uptempo could be seen on the feet of players like the Chicago Bulls‘ Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. Just like they were on court, the two seemed to rock the Air Max Uptempo in a way that paralleled their substantially different personalities. Pippen, kept a low profile, and seemed to let his game speak for itself with about 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists per game. Rodman on the other hand, crashed the boards emphatically grabbing 15 or so per game, all the while keeping fans and the league guessing as to what color his hair would be. Both had significantly different approaches to the game –and to life for that matter– but the third version of the Air Max Uptempo handled the footwear duties for both of these stars for a good portion of the season.

The Nike Air Max Uptempo 97 returns in retro form next week in a original colorway featuring White, Black and College Navy. With a full length Max Air sole and the BRS 1000 carbon rubber outsole, these may be retros but they’ll perform on a level that will have you wanting to hit the hardwood in them.
