Our first Fielder’s Choice catalog of the year is hitting mailboxes, and our cover athletes are bringing a double dose of knowledge to Eastbay’s Field Tested program. Now baseball is getting the same position-specific reviews and professional advice that has already helped so many Eastbay athletes prepare to win.

Atlanta outfielders and brothers Justin and B.J. Upton are leading off for Eastbay’s baseball season and excited about being Field Testers for one big reason: helping young athletes get a head start on their game. As Justin explains, “Field Tested is an advantage because you’re able to get a feel for each shoe before you order it. If you have certain qualities you like in a shoe, you are able to find out which one can give you those qualities.”

Having customized gear is key, even for pro athletes. For the 2014 baseball season, Justin and B.J. each picked a different cleat that reflects their strengths. For Justin, it’s the adidas Poweralley Mid, a cleat designed for powerful rotation and comfort. “As a player, I’m explosive. I hit for power and go hard at all times. The first things I look for in a cleat are stability, a light weight, and traction. In baseball, you’re constantly rotating, so anything that makes it easier is a benefit anywhere on the field.”

To maximize his Poweralley cleats at the plate, he also looks for very specific things in a batting glove. “I love a tight batting glove. I want something that fits the hand well, that’s not going to stretch out on you, and is durable. Your batting gloves are for feel and grip, but at the same time, you want them to protect your hands from getting beat up.”

B.J., however, went with the adidas adiZero 5-Tool 2.5 for a lightweight speed cleat that’ll help him get around the bases in no time. He says, “The spikes help my game, especially with speed. Being a centerfielder, you have to be able to run pretty well. Since they’re such light shoes, and speed is a big part of my game, they’re a big part of what I do out there.” Eastbay’s got this cleat in eight colors, including exclusives like black/orange and white/navy.

In addition to his speed, B.J.’s fielding glove is also a key to his game. He told us, “When I look for a fielding glove, I look for size, color, how the leather holds up, and how it feels on my hand. Right now, I’m sticking with a trapeze web in the outfield.”

For more feedback on picking the right cleats, batting gloves, fielding gloves, and more, take a look at our reviews from other elite baseball players. While many of the soccer fans out there already know of Kansas City forward Teal Bunbury, not so many have gotten this kind of advice from him. Teal is the first soccer pro to become part of the Eastbay Field Tested team. The program offers professional advice on gear along with elite-level ratings on top product attributes. What does Teal think so far?

“The Field Tested program is huge for young athletes, especially if you’re aspiring to play at the collegiate or professional level. It gives you a better insight into what athletes at the highest level prefer to wear and what fits their playing style. You’re able to look at that and gauge yourself against somebody who has played the game, has good knowledge of the game, and will be able to give really good feedback.”

Teal also shared his own feedback on the adidas Predator LZ TRX FG. As a forward, his priority is control during passing and shooting, which he gets from the Predator’s 3D Lethal Zones.

“I love the new Lethal Zones, especially the way you can pass. The Predator has a lot of cushion along the foot so it’s very easy to be accurate with your passes. Being more of a powerful forward, I like to shoot. The Predator gives me a better feel on the ball at the top when I’m trying to shoot with my laces. It helps me with my accuracy, zeroing in, and getting it on target.”

After striking accuracy, Teal’s second priority is finding a cleat that’s lightweight. While the Predator isn’t the lightest cleat on the market, the combination of speed and support is just right for power forwards like Teal:

“I want to use my speed, so I prefer a cleat that’s as light as possible. But I also want it to give me enough cushioning and stability where I’m not going to roll my ankle. With the Predators, I definitely feel like they are very light, but made for a powerful player, someone with speed. They fit me perfectly.”

Teal’s review of the Predator is just one of the many reviews you’ll discover within Eastbay Field Tested. You’ll find ratings on attributes like cushioning, control, traction, and fit for many of your favorite cleats. You can also review cleats that you’ve tried, letting other players out there know how they stack up.

Eastbay’s Field Tested program is in full swing, helping athletes across the globe Prepare to Win. Our new product-testing program brings position-specific reviews from the game’s top athletes, straight to you. One of our newest pros in the Field Tested lineup is Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson, who is already a firm believer.

Eastbay Field Tester: Russell Wilson“For high school athletes, getting advice from pro athletes is the biggest thing you can get. Everybody wants to be a pro athlete and I think the biggest thing is gaining knowledge at a young age. In terms of Eastbay Field Tested, they’re doing a great job of building a program for high school athletes to learn more about what we wear and why we like to wear it.”

For the upcoming football season, Russell chose the Nike Lunar Superbad Pro TD as his perfect cleat. He offered up some advice to players like him who might be considering the Superbad as well.

“The Superbad, for me, is the right weight. It’s a cleat that I feel like I’m on the balls of my feet, but at the same time I don’t feel like the cleat’s too light. The most important thing is the comfort and, at the same time, feeling like I’m a cheetah out on the football field, like I can move really well, and I can get past people when I need to.”

And while the Superbad isn’t commonly thought of as a quarterback cleat, Russell believes it provides him some pretty key attributes including no-slip traction in the pocket, ankle stability that prevents injury, and the perfect combination of support and speed:

“I try to be the guy who’s clutch at the end of the game. The Superbad helps me maneuver and get away from these big defensive linemen that are trying to smash me in the backfield. I’m a guy that can move pretty well and can run the ball, so I want to feel that comfort, but I also want to feel that speed. It gives me confidence when the game is on the line.”

For more feedback on the right cleats for your game, take a look at our reviews from other elite football players. Eastbay selected these players to provide information on a variety of product attributes like flexibility, acceleration, comfort, traction, and more. By now you may have noticed Eastbay’s new look. We’ve always been about helping serious athletes Prepare to Win, but we’ve stepped up our game recently, with an all-new, product-testing program. It’s one more way that Eastbay helps athletes dominate on game day.

Product reviews are easy to come by, but position-specific reviews by the sport’s most elite competitors are not. That’s where Eastbay Field Tested comes in. This game-changing advantage gives you access to field tests from top athletes in your sport and position. Leading the push is Patrick Peterson (DB, Arizona), who knows the importance of getting the right gear before you step on the field.

“I think Field Tested is pretty cool. To have the opportunity to test and to be able to put kids in the right product — I think that’s something that’s very smart. I didn’t have that when I was in high school.”

So, how do you find the perfect gear for your game? It starts with advice from pro athletes like Patrick Peterson. You’ve seen this stellar DB in the Alpha Pro Low TD because lightweight speed and stability are of top importance to Patrick.

“I like light stuff. I like something that looks good – something that’s light and durable. Nike Flywire is a new technology that lightens up the shoe and adds a little more flexibility, so you can generate power while you’re running.”

With gloves, it’s all about supreme grip for Patrick. Always ready for an interception opportunity, he trusts the Nike Vapor Jet 2.0 Receiver Gloves.

“The Vapors are pretty light and durable, but I’d have to say the grip is most important when you’re catching the ball. And now they have the leather coming all the way down your wrist so you can have better ball protection. When you’re tucking the ball, it’s not on your wrist where it’s sweaty.”

For more feedback on the right cleats and gloves for your game, take a look at our reviews from other elite athletes around the country. These players have been specially selected to provide you with information on a variety of product attributes like weight, fit, strength, cushioning, and more. Once you’re convinced of which product is your perfect match, return the favor by filling out your own review, and let other players know exactly what you think.
