Nike’s World Basketball Festival came to a close yesterday with an exhibition match between the US and France Men’s National teams. The scene at Madison Square Garden turned into quite a blowout, with the US team winning 86-55.
There were a few lasting images that stood out from the match-up. Boris Diaw is tremendously, tremendously fat and out of shape. Rudy Gay led all scorers with 19 points and had quite a few awesome dunks. Andre Iguodala is one of the best athletes in the league.
Chauncey Billups is the perfect point guard to run this team during international play. He also scored 17, all within the flow of the offense and by physically punishing opposing points to the basket. There was also all kinds of sneaker variety on the French squad, with everything from the more recent Hyperfuse to the three-year-old TS Pro Model seen on-court. It was more of the same for the US, as the Hyperfuse, Hyperdunk 2010 and splashes of adidas TS saw the court. The biggest highlight was probably the Team USA Hyperdunk Lows worn by assistant coach Chris Collins, son of Doug. France largely struggled thanks to their weak guard play, and the combination of the Americans’ speed and aggressiveness proved to be too much.
