Last week’s Player of the Week Cam Newton was once again in contention for the nod this week, but the honors travel to the Bluegrass State, where Kentucky quarterback Mike Hartline led the Wildcats to an improbable victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks. Hartline stuffed the stat sheet, completing 32 of his 42 passes for 349 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions.
At halftime, the Wildcats faced a 28-10 deficit, their misfortunes against South Carolina only continuing. Last year, Hartline suffered a knee injury in a game against the Cocks, sidelining him for most of the remaining games on the schedule. Out for redemption this year, a poised Hartline led a signature comeback win for the program. He passed for 3 second-half touchdowns, including a 24-yard strike to receiver Randall Cobb with just 1:15 left to play. Paired with a successful 2-point conversion, the touchdown pass proved to be the difference in the game, as Kentucky completed the upset of 10th ranked South Carolina by a 31-28 margin.
Unranked Kentucky now finds themselves hosting the SEC Rival Georgia Bulldogs this Saturday. The game is pivotal in the SEC East race, as Kentucky trails Georgia by a game.
