In the midst of one of the all-time great NBA postseasons, we look back 20 years ago, when Dikembe Mutombo and the Denver Nuggets completed an unprecedented series upset of the Seattle Supersonics.
After the Nuggets became the first eighth-seeded team to ever eliminate a top-seed in the NBA playoffs, Mutombo famously laid flat on the court overcome with emotion as he held the game ball in the air. After all, he did lead the way by blocking a record 31 shots in 5 games.
The adidas Originals team is celebrating this historic moment in sports by bringing back the signature shoes worn by Mutombo during the series — the Mutombo 2. With a sleeker design than the first shoe, the Mutombo 2 alludes to traditional African tribal prints through an embossed upper and textured outsole.
These adidas basketball shoes are back the way you remember them and in the original Black/University Red colorway. Blocked Mutombo lettering across the tongue is a throwback to the game’s golden era. Grab your pair from Eastbay today.
