Later this summer, Nike and USA Basketball are putting together an event that will bring the world’s best basketball teams and top musical performers to New York City. The inaugural World Basketball Festival will be a four-day event that Nike has committed to reprising biennially. The event is meant to be a celebration of the performance and culture of the game.

The leading basketball brands within the Nike portfolio – Nike Basketball, Jordan, and Converse, will be featured at the event. The festival will kick-off  on August 12th with a showcase featuring members of the 2010 USA Basketball National Team open-air court in Times Square. Also on tap is a is a surprise musical performance in Times Square.

Moving from Times Square, the event will resume on the 13th and14th at the legendary basketball courts at Rucker Park in Harlem. There, open-air practices and scrimmages by the National Teams from Brazil and Puerto Rico, and France will be mixed with a youth tournament serving as the championships for some of New York’s top summer basketball leagues.

The exhibition games will serve as part of the teams’ preparation for the 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championship in Turkey later that month.

“We’re thrilled with the opportunity to bring the energy and excitement of USA Basketball’s Men’s National Team to fans and give them with a way to celebrate their team,” said Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball Chairman. “We are honored to have the opportunity to represent the United States in the FIBA World Championship and I can’t think of a better sendoff for our team than the World Basketball Festival.”
