NFL Watch: Prayers Answered in Jacksonville

words_Brandon Richard

The art of the “Hail Mary” play in football is hardly an art at all. The quarterback throws up a prayer of a pass into a crowd of players 50 yards down the field, and hopes it ends up in the hands of one of his teammates. The Hail Mary is rarely ever converted. However, when it is, the play becomes an instant classic.

That was the case in Jacksonville today, when the Jaguars and Texas were knotted at 24 with 8 seconds left to play. After recovering a Joel Dreesen fumble, Jaguars quarterback David Garrard was left with little time to operate. One quick pass completion of 11 yards and a penalty for an additional 5 put Jacksonville on the 50-yard line, giving Garrard an opportunity to heave a desperate pass down the field as the clock expired.

With just 3 seconds left in the game, Garrard took the snap in the shot gun, dodged would-be tacklers and launched a pass from about 55-yards down the field. The pass, intended for receiver Mike Sims-Walker, was initially batted down by a Texans defender. However, the deflected ball landed right into the outstretched arms of receiver Mike Thomas, who stepped into the endzone for the game-winning touchdown as the crowd erupted. The miracle wins puts the Jags at 5-4 and well within striking distance of the AFC South lead.
