Capping off an action packed opening week of the 2013 NFL season, the Washington Redskins hosted the Philadelphia Eagles in a highly anticipated matchup that featured Robert Griffin III’s return to the field and Chip Kelly’s innovative offense. While it took a half for RG3 to get back into the swing of things, Kelly’s Eagle O was electric from the opening kickoff, running a fast paced 53 plays in the first half. That number is the highest since the Minnesota Vikings ran 56 in a half in 1998.
The Eagles didn’t just run plays — they scored points. Michael Vick connected with Desean Jackson and Brent Celek on touchdown passes and added a TD run of his own to help give Philly a 26-7 advantage at the half.
“Shady” McCoy started off the second half with more of the same, finding paydirt after a 34-yard trot to push the score to 33-7. With the Eagles perhaps a little winded, the Redskins would find a little groove. Running back Alfred Morris scored Washington’s first offensive touchdown of the game in the third quarter and RG3 found Leonard Hankerson for two touchdown passes in the fourth to make the score 33-27. However, time ran out after an unsuccessful onside kick attempt and the Eagles held on for the win.
The Eagles will next try their new offense against the visiting San Diego Chargers on Sunday, while the ‘Skins will try to lock up their first victory in Green Bay.
Elsewhere in Week 1, Peyton Manning’s record 7 touchdown passes led the Denver Broncos to a revenge win over the Baltimore Ravens; the New Orleans Saints topped the Atlanta Falcons at home in Sean Payton’s return to the sideline; Colin Kaepernick outgunned Aaron Rodgers in a high-scoring showdown between the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers; Andrew Luck picked up another comeback win as the Indianapolis Colts rallied to beat the Oakland Raiders; the Dallas Cowboys took advantage of six New York Giants turnovers to win their season opener; and the Houston Texans came back from 21 points down to shock the Chargers in San Diego.
