With 8:17 left in the 4th quarter of Sunday’s game between the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants, Eli Manning connected with tight end Kevin Boss on a touchdown pass to give the Giants a 31-10 lead and what seemed to be control of the NFC East. However, as the old saying goes, “it ain’t over til’ it’s over.” The Eagles rallied with 28 unanswered points in the final 7:28 of the game to pull off an absolute stunner at New Meadowlands Stadium.
The comeback started with a 65-yard strike from quarterback Michael Vick to tight end Brent Celek. After recovering the ensuing onside kick, the Eagles found paydirt once again, this time on a 4-yard Vick run. The Giants weren’t able to get anything going on the following possession, forcing them to punt. Momentum stayed with the Eagles, who used two long Vick runs to set up a game-tying touchdown pass to wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. Once again, the Giants looked stagnant on offense, going 3-and-out with their next possession. However, they managed to milk the clock down to just 14 seconds, and almost surely sent it to overtime. That’s when it happened.
Instructed to punt the ball out of bounds instead of putting it in the hands of the electric DeSean Jackson, rookie punter Matt Dodge did the exactly opposite. The kick was a line drive to Jackson. After bobbling the ball, Jackson scooped it up, made a few cuts and took it 65 yards for a game-winning touchdown. The Eagles are now a game ahead in the NFC East and own the tiebreaker against the Giants with two games remaining.
