Somehow, no matter where the Boise State Broncos are in the polls, they seem to have more than their fare share of doubters. The Broncos opened the reason ranked number three in the College Football Rankings. Their opponent Monday night was Virginia Tech, a team that was ranked 10th going into the match-up. You might think that the country’s third-ranked team would be an easy favorite, but the naysayers have been out in full force over the past few weeks in anticipation of their opening game against the Hokies.

Boise State has only lost five games since 2005, going unbeaten in three of those five years, so why so much doubt?

Playing in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) has its advantages, specifically a lack of real competition for the Broncos. With Virginia Tech as their toughest scheduled opponent, the Virgina Tech Hokies ranked at number 10 and playing at home were not only the first tests of the season, but they may be the only one.

Monday night started with 17 unanswered points for Boise State, silencing the aforementioned naysayers. However, it didn’t take long for those doubting Boise State to have reason to believe that they were correct. Virginia Tech went up 21-20 in the third quarter on one of running back Ryan William’s two touchdowns on the night. Hokies quarterback Tyrod Taylor led the way for Virginia Tech, passing for 186 yards and two touchdowns as well as rushing for 73 yards.

However with under two minutes to play and the score at 30-26, it looked as if Boise State might be on their way to failing the test that seemingly everyone wanted to see them fail. Quarterback Kellen Moore wasn’t about to let that happen, though. Moore led the Broncos down field and with 1:09 remaining found Austin Pettis for a 13-yard touchdown to give Boise State the victory.

Boise State’s 15th consecutive win came on the shoulders of Kellen Moore, who threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns. Maybe most importantly, though, Moore’s leadership in the final two minutes of the game is a preview of what’s to come for the remainder of the season. Boise State proved to be the real deal, and Kellen Moore just tossed his name in the hat for the Heisman Trophy Award at the end of this season.
