With the biggest game of the college season beginning soon, and the first round of the NFL Playoffs complete, the entire sports world seems to be focused on the sport of football right now. Subsequently, today’s Eastbay Memory Lane post takes a look back at 1996, when you could see Brett Favre and Kordell Stewart taking top billing on the “All You Need is Sports” cover.
As you dig a little deeper into the catalog, you can see that turf shoes were big in 1996. Shoes like Reebok’s Bump and Run and Nike’s Zoom Turf will probably stir up the most memories for many. The Reebok Instapump technology was also in its prime. Derrick Thomas, Barry Sanders, Herman Moore and Eric Metcalf were the star players selected to be featured amongst some of the most aggressively named cleats footwear has seen. There are even a few cleat names that definitely would not make the cut nowadays, like the Reebok Pitbull Muzzle.
Baseball shoes for Ken Griffey Jr. and Frank Thomas were also big during this era, as Griffey wore the Nike Air Griffey Max and Frank Thomas represented Reebok by wearing his signature, the Reebok Big Hurt.
