Just like any other superstar in the NBA, Magic Johnson wore some of the most popular basketball sneakers during his time in the league. Twenty years ago today, that all came to an unexpected halt after Magic Johnson announced his unfortunate retirement from the game of basketball after being diagnosed with HIV.

While running the league as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers during his 1995-1996 return to the NBA, Magic Johnson endorsed his own collection of MVP shoes in a variety of colorways. Offered by Eastbay at the time, the MVP footwear collection was available in the memorable Return Mid and Point Forward styles.

Puma was also still in the league at the time, with styles like the Elevator Mid and Perimeter Mid seen in this vintage Eastbay catalog scan. We also get a rare look at some New Balance basketball shoes in this trip down memory lane, like the NB BB835 Mid and the NB BB900.

Enjoy a look at Magic’s classic “MVP” Footwear collection and more below, as part of Eastbay’s latest trip down memory lane.
