Top 7 Life Lessons From The High School Volleyball Player

AAU Volleyball Championships 2017

If there’s one thing the girls at the AAU Junior World Volleyball Championships know, it’s how to kill it on the court, but these young women have skills beyond their hits, passes, and serves. Like most athletes, these volleyball players have learned valuable life skills from their sport.

Here are the top lessons straight from the girls at the AAU Girls’ Junior National Volleyball Championships:

1. Time Mangagement

“I go to a small school and play four different sports on top of travel volleyball, so time management is the by far the No. 1 thing I need to know how to do. It’s only 15 minutes for me to get to my club, but during those 15 minutes I’m not on my phone. I’m using every second I have to do homework, or plan out what I’m going to accomplish in practice, or later at home.” — Jayden Standish

2. Responsibility Is Key

“It’s definitely taught me how to be a stronger person and become more independent. Going to all of these different practices and tournaments at different places, I have to be the one to keep track of all of that. My parents have their own things going on, so I had to grow up a little faster and manage my schedule on my own.” — Caroline Gibbons

3. Quitters Never Win

“My whole family plays volleyball and college sports. I grew up around sports and always wanted to be like the rest of my family. I knew that college volleyball was what I wanted to do and I work my butt off for it. I’ve worked so hard and now I look at where I am, and it’s awesome to see how far I’ve come after the time I’ve put in.” — Allie Trame

4. Take The Lead

“You have to take the lead when you play volleyball. Communicating on the court is huge — there’s no room for hesitation when you’re in an intense game. You step up and take charge or the team suffers.” — Hannah Prasky

5. Adapt, Adapt, Adapt

“Adjusting to your teammates is huge. You might not always click with them outside volleyball, but you need to find a way to work together on the court. It’s the same thing with a job in the real world — you might not always get along with your coworkers, but you need to do your job together and do it well. Volleyball is the same thing.” — Jayden Standish

6. Be A Team Player

“Learning to work together as a team has been huge. Club teams are filled with girls from all over the place, and you have to figure out ways to work together. On school teams you know everyone — club is different. You have to learn everyone’s personalities and playing styles then work that in with your own style.” — Holly Reinke

7. Well-Rounded & Stronger

“I think volleyball makes me a stronger person. Some kids go to school just to go to school. I participate in clubs, travel places, and meet different people, all through volleyball. I’ve learned so much. Overall I’m a more well-rounded person because of it.” — Sierra Athen
