Following Michael Jordan’s insight, the Air Jordan 11 brought a formal look to the court, using patent leather for the first time on an athletic sneaker. This weekend, the low-top version of the 11 arrives in an all-new colorway that pays homage to the line’s heritage.

The ‘Infrared 23’ Air Jordan 11 Low sports a sleek, black patent leather and mesh upper with hits of infrared on the logos and herringbone. Below sits a white midsole and blue-tinted translucent outsole.

These Jordan shoes will be available at Eastbay for $150 this Saturday, June 14 at 8:00 a.m. EST / 7:00 a.m. PST. Gradeschool, preschool and toddler sizes will be on hand as well. Follow @Eastbay on Twitter and @OfficialEastbay on Instagram for all release information and updates.

Eastbay Memory Lane // Air Jordan 11 Retro ‘Cool Grey’ March 2001

Yesterday, we gave you a look at the ‘Cool Grey’ Air Jordan 1 Retro ’95 releasing here this weekend. The shoe, of course, takes its cues from the popular Air Jordan 11 highlighted in today’s Eastbay Memory Lane.

In March 2001, the yet-to-be-released retro graced our pages alongside the Air Jordan 16 and a plethora of Jordan clothing. The ‘Cool Grey’ 11 was an absolute game-changer — perhaps a catalyst for the sneaker game as we know it today. Along with the launch came mass campouts, unruly behavior at shops and some of the first national media coverage for retro sneaker releases. The shoes re-released again during the holiday season of 2010 and caused even more commotion than they did the first time around. Not part of the original Air Jordan 11 run between 1995 and 1996, the ‘Cool Greys’ are arguably the most popular retro release of all-time.

This weekend, the ‘Cool Grey’ 11 is reborn in the form of the equally iconic Air Jordan 1. The Air Jordan 1 Retro ’95 is updated with some of the 11’s most prominent features, including patent leather, carbon fiber details, unique branding elements and a translucent rubber outsole.

Before Saturday’s launch, check out this throwback Eastbay catalog page and let us know what memories you have of the first ‘Cool Grey’ 11 Retro release. Where does the shoe rank on the list of your favorite Jordan shoes?

Michael Jordan wearing Air Jordan XI 11 Black Red 1996 NBA Finals

words // Brandon Richard

In the spring of 1996, Nike released the Air Jordan XI in Black/True Red-White for Michael Jordan’s postseason run with the Chicago Bulls. The run proved to be historic, Chicago following up a record 72-win regular season with a successful bid for a fourth NBA Championship in six years. The lasting image from the Bulls’ Game 6 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA Finals is Michael Jordan crying on the locker room floor, overcome with emotion after winning the first championship that his father James wasn’t alive to see. On MJ’s feet for that title-clinching game and timeless NBA moment – the Black/Red Air Jordan XI.

This Friday, the Jordan Brand will officially re-release the Black/Red colorway for the third time. The shoe was initially brought back in December of 2001 and again as part of a Countdown Package in 2008. Four years later, you get another shot at owning this classic.

While you wait for the year’s most anticipated launch, check out an Eastbay Magazine page from Spring ’96 featuring the original Air Jordan XI. You can also check out some of the Jordan apparel they released for the “Columbia” and “Concord” colorways. Shop the Retro 11 Clothing that accompanies this year’s release here today.
