What to Expect from Leonard Fournette in Year One

Picture your first day at a new job. You’ve gone through the introductions and training, but now it’s time to get to business and do what you were hired for. It can be nerve-racking.

Now imagine having to do this in front of over 60,000 screaming fans as you’re expected to revolutionize the organization you’re a part of from day one. Yeah … no pressure.

This is the exact situation Jacksonville running back Leonard Fournette will find himself in when he steps onto the gridiron on September 10 in Houston. So it’s kind of a shock to see him so calm and confident. But once you hear about his intense preparation and training, it starts to make sense.

“I feel like playing in the SEC helped a lot,” Leonard said.

When I was choosing colleges, I chose this conference specifically because that’s where the most NFL guys are from. Everyone is so big and fast. That level of competition makes you want to work even harder.

Facing heavyweights like Alabama and Florida week in and week out instilled a tough training regimen into the 22-year-old that he stills uses to this day.

The drills I work on highlight every part of my game: speed, power, and agility.
Leonard Fournette

10- and 2-yard starts and stops and sideline sprints are his go-to ways to get faster, while he utilizes squat workouts to add some serious strength.

But a higher level of competition meant a lot more than just harder workouts — Leonard learned the importance of recovery too.

You’ve got to take care of your body. The damage of this game can take a toll on you but you can’t feel beat up out there. So I take the time to get massages, get my feet worked on, whatever I can do to feel good.
Leonard Fournette

That work ethic is exactly what you want in a player who you invest a fourth overall draft pick in, but still, he has a world of expectations to live up to in the pros. Luckily, he’s got the right mindset about his future.

“I look back to my freshman year in college and I wasn’t a starter right away,” Leonard said. “I had to compete and fight for that right. I know nothing will be handed to me at the next level, either, and I need to earn my snaps.”

Good answer.
