Tori Bowie: Focused on Fast

When you meet Tori Bowie, the first two things you notice are her smile and her contagious laugh. In fact, it’s almost impossible to believe that when this warm, inviting young woman steps onto the track, she becomes a ruthless competitor who stops at nothing to win.

But Tori is no stranger to transformation. In just four years, she went from an injured long jumper to a dynamic sprinter. And now, with a hat trick of Olympic medals under her belt, the name Tori Bowie strikes fear into the hearts of her opponents.

So what makes Tori Bowie so dangerous on the track? The answer is twofold. First, to put it simply, she wants to win more than you do.

“I feel like I’m the best at what I do, and I’m hard on myself when I don’t win, simply because I know I’m the best,” Tori explained. “If I lose, I feel it’s something I did wrong. It’s not because someone came and beat me who’s more competitive or they have more talent—it’s because of me, and that’s what makes me disappointed.”

I put in the work every single day, and I know I have the talent, so once I touch the line, I expect to see those results. I expect to win.

Second, Tori possesses a single-minded focus on her own growth and performance, blocking out the noise and the competition so that she can constantly improve her own race.

“Focusing on what you have to focus on is the hardest part about the job,” she said. “There are so many other distractions. You’ve got other people running just as well as you, and you’re looking at their results. And you’ve got this going on over here. Stay focused on what you have to do.”

That’s the hardest part about life — just trying to stay focused on your own journey. I’m practicing it a lot this year. I’m going into 2017 all about Tori Bowie’s journey.

The desire to win and the ability to focus on what it takes to make that happen are the defining characteristics of Tori Bowie the competitor. But Tori Bowie the person? She’s keeping all this success in perspective.

“I don’t want anything to go to waste,” she said. “When I’m out here every single day, I have to have that perspective that you know, other ladies would love to be where I am right now, other ladies would love to have this talent.”

I’m gonna go into 2017 and work hard. Go into the meets, and give 100%, and just see what happens. This year, I’m gonna have fun.
