Week 2 of the NFL season resulted in several well-contested games, from Michael Vick’s successful return as starting quarterback in a win over the Detroit Lions, to the Kansas City Chiefs improving to 2-0 for the first time since 2005 with a victory in Cleveland. Even Monday night’s game was a thriller, with Saints kicker Garrett Hartley successfully converting a field goal, as time expired, to push the defending champions past the San Francisco 49ers. However, it was a late-game charge led by Houston Texans quarterback Matt Schaub that impressed the most, landing him the Week 2 NFL Player of the Week.

What looked to be a highly disappointing week 2 loss for the Texans became what is being called a defining win. After finding his team down 27-10 with just a little over five minutes left to play in the third quarter, Schaub led his team to a late game rally. Capped off by a touchdown pass to a double-covered Andre Johnson with 1:13 left to play in the game, Schaub and the Texans rallied with 17 unanswered points to force overtime. In OT, Texans tight end Joel Dreessen was on the receiving end of a 28-yard pass from Schaub, setting up a game-winning 34-yard field goal from kicker Neil Rackers. The win gave the Texans their first overtime win in franchise history.

Schaub finished his day completing 38 of 52 passes for 497 yards and three touchdowns. His 497 passing yards, like Arian Foster’s 231 rushing yards last week, are a new team record. Most importantly, he propelled his team to a win in a game that looked all but lost midway through the second half. That’s why Schaub is my pick for NFL Player of the Week.
