Create Your Legacy: Malakai Lewars + James Harden

Millions of young athletes look up to James Harden, hoping that someday they’ll be able to replicate his killer crossover and unguardable stepback. They want to play just like him. Harden has some words of advice, though: Dream bigger. Why be the next James Harden when you can be the first you?

“The advice I give to kids is to try and be better than me,” Harden said. “Whatever you’re passionate about, whatever you love: Do it and don’t let anybody stop you.”

Eastbay cover athlete Malakai Lewars has taken that advice and has run with it. He looks up to superstars like James Harden and Damian Lillard, but he’s not trying to copy their game. He’s focused on creating his own legacy. That doesn’t mean he can’t steal some pointers from some of the game’s greatest players, though.

“I like James Harden’s game because of the confidence he plays with,” Lewars said.

Harden’s confidence comes from countless hours of hard work and preparation. Nobody steps out on the court and dominates without putting in a lot of time and effort before the game. Malakai understands that there’s no shortcut to success, and he’s willing to follow in Harden’s footsteps to achieve greatness.

“My ultimate goal in basketball is to try and get better every day at practice. If I keep doing that, then maybe one day I’ll be the best.”
Malakai Lewars

It’s a lofty goal, but that’s exactly what James Harden wants young athletes to strive for. He wants to inspire everyone to chase their dreams, no matter how big and bold they are.

“I’ve been following Eastbay since I was a little boy,” Harden said. “Eastbay always has the hottest shoes out. You’d open the magazine and just look at all the shoes. Now, being on the cover of Eastbay, hopefully I can relate to those kids that have that same dream I did and want to be where I am or even better.”
