Atlanta Falcons kicker Matt Bryant celebrates his game-winning field goal.
words // Brandon Richard
The NFL’s unbeaten teams were reduced to one in Week 6, following the Atlanta Falcons’ gritty 23-20 win over the Oakland Raiders at home on Sunday. Quarterback Matt Ryan struggled on the day with three interceptions, but the Atlanta’s defense and kicker Matt Bryant gave the team a much needed lift.
Atlanta grabbed the lead after cornerback Asante Samuel returned an intercepted pass 79 yards for a touchdown with a shade under three minutes left to play. However, the Raiders reclaimed the lead when Darren McFadden finished off a drive by powering in from the 2-yard line with 40 seconds on the clock. That proved to be just enough time for “Matty Ice” to pull off another fourth-quarter comeback. Ryan completed four passes to set up a difficult 55-yard game-winning kick by Bryant.
With the win, the Falcons move to 6-0 for the first time in franchise history. They’re off with a Bye this week before traveling to Philadelphia in Week 8. Are they currently the favorite to win the NFC?
In other Week 6 action, the Baltimore Ravens lost some key players, but edged past the Dallas Cowboys to maintain their AFC North lead; Cleveland topped the cross-state rival Cincinnati Bengals for their first win of the season; the Seattle Seahawks defense continued to impress in a comeback victory over the New England Patriots; Robert Griffin III’s 76-yard run helped seal the deal for the Washington Redskins in their 38-26 win against the Minnesota Vikings; the New York Giants dominated the San Francisco 49ers; Green Bay looked like Green Bay in a 42-24 romping of the previously undefeated Houston Texans; and Peyton Manning led a Monday Night Football record comeback win for the Denver Broncos over the division rival San Diego Chargers.
