After what was probably one of the most exciting weeks in the history of the NFL, all of talk will unfortunately surround the controversial call that ended Monday night’s contest between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks.

Played at the always loud CenturyLink Field, the game was a defensive struggle that featured Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers being sacked a total of eight times in the first half. The Seahawks limited the high octane Packers offense to just two field goals before halftime, while Russell Wilson and Golden Tate hooked up for a 41-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter for a 7-6 advantage.

Green Bay rallied in the second half, running 41 offensive plays for field goals of 29 and 40 yards and a 1-yard Cedric Benson TD run with 8:44 left to take a 12-7 lead. The two teams took turns coming up with stops, until Seattle regained possession with 46 seconds left to play in the fourth quarter.

On Green Bay’s 46-yard line, Wilson completed a 22-yard pass to wide receiver Sidney Rice on 2nd down to put Seattle within striking distance. A couple of long incompletions would follow, setting up 4th and 10 on the 24. Wilson dropped back, scrambled and threw a deep corner pass to Tate that was intercepted by Packers safety M.D. Jennings. Game over. Packers come back from disastrous first half to pull out an important game with playoff implications at one of the league’s toughest stadiums. Well, at least that’s what we thought.

Two officials behind the play made different calls; one for an interception, while the other called it a Seahawks touchdown. After brief deliberation, the call on the field was a touchdown, meaning Seattle had pulled out a miraculous victory. Even after being reviewed upstairs, the call on the field was upheld because replay can’t overrule possession per league rules. Video evidence clearly shows Jennings gaining possession of the ball and going to the ground, while Tate simple reached in with one arm in an attempt to take it.

Unfortunately, there is no good news on this front for the Packers. The NFL has announced that they are standing by the referees’ decision and will not overturn the result.
