NFL Watch // Big Red Wins In Return To Philly

words // Brandon Richard

It didn’t take long for Week 3 of the NFL season to cue up the drama, as Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made a Thursday Night return to Philadelphia, where he coached the Eagles for 14 seasons. Reid was relieved of his duties after the Eagles finished 4-12 last season and missed the playoffs for the second-straight year. Though many expected Reid to take some time off, the coveted coach was immediately inked to a deal by the Chiefs in January and has his new team rolling early.

The Chiefs’ game philosophy appears to be something along the lines of ‘don’t turn the ball over, let the defense make plays.’ Quarterback Alex Smith completed 22 of his 35 passes for 273 yards and no touchdowns, but also no interceptions. Jamaal Charles led a rushing attack that was out-gained by 118 yards, but never fumbled. Defensively, the Chiefs recovered three lost fumbles and picked off Eagles QB Michael Vick twice. As a result, Kansas City controlled the game from start to finish, ultimately winning 26-16 and giving ‘Big Red’ a triumphant victory in his return to Lincoln Financial.

After winning just two games last season, the Chiefs are now 3-0 and will host the New York Giants on Sunday.

Also in Week 3 action, the Cincinnati Bengals picked up a statement win with a late-game rally against the Green Bay Packers; Brian Hoyer stepped in for Brandon Weeden to help the Cleveland Browns get their first win of the season; New England’s defense held Tampa Bay to just 3 points in a blowout; the Detroit Lions handed RG3 and the Redskins an 0-3 start; Cam Newton’s Carolina Panthers blasted the New York Giants 38-0; the Miami Dolphins picked up an unlikely comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons to start 3-0 for the first time since 2002; Indianapolis looked impressive in a dominant 27-7 win over the San Francisco 49ers; Seattle ran up 45 points on Jacksonville; the disappointing Pittsburgh Steelers fell to 0-3 after a 40-23 loss at the hands of the Chicago Bears; and the Denver Broncos kept up their torrid offensive pace against the Oakland Raiders on Monday Night.
