WNBA Sneaker Watch: Lynx Cruise in Game 1

The Minnesota Lynx and Atlanta Dream tip-off Game 1 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

words // Brandon Richard

For the Atlanta Dream and Minnesota Lynx, it all comes down to this. The next five (or less) games will determine which team will take the top spot in the WNBA hierarchy. In one corner, you have the Dream, who are making their second-straight Finals appearance after upsetting the Eastern Conference’s Number 1 and Number 2 seeds in this year’s playoffs. The opposition is the team that had the league’s best record during the regular season, the Minnesota Lynx. As well-rounded as any WNBA team, the Lynx topped the previous franchise-high for wins by nine and have only lost consecutive games once this season.

Game 1 of the WNBA Finals was actually a little closer than the score suggests. In front of more than 15,000 fans, the Dream and Lynx were neck-and-neck through three quarters, tied at 62 entering the fourth. That’s when Minnesota turned on their stifling defense and started the last quarter on a 13-0 run, starting with a Lindsay Whalen 3-point play and ending with two fast break layups. After going up 75-62, the Lynx had the game in the bag, eventually winning 88-74 and taking a 1-0 series lead.

Forward Rebekkah Brunson led the Lynx with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Seimone Augustus and Lindsay Whalen helped Minnesota’s cause with 22 and 15 points respectively. Leading the way for the Dream was the seemingly unstoppable Angel McCoughtry, who led all scorers with 33 points.

Game 2 will be played in Minneapolis tonight at 8:00 p.m. EST.
