In 1998, soccer icon Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima (or simply Ronaldo) was the lead athlete for the first ever Mercurial Nike soccer cleat.
Inspired and designed by the player popularly dubbed “El Fenómeno,” the Mercurial was backed by the tagline “Ultralight, so your legs can be as fast as your imagination.” This spoke to Ronaldo’s creativity, speed, skill and instinctive eye for the goal as he helped reignite the Brazilian soccer program.
Ronaldo is closely associated with the original Silver/Yellow-Blue Mercurial he wore in France for the 1998 World Cup. Celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the iconic boot, Nike created a special Mercurial Vapor IX inspired by the original design.
“In the years since the first Mercurial boot was created, modern construction has allowed for a more refined way of making boots. For example, the original version of this boot was constructed of multiple materials stitched together, McCartney elaborated. “This version is a one-piece, seamless upper as per other Nike Vapor Mercurial IX editions.
In addition to rethinking construction, the design team added a modern visual twist to the 2013 version. Yellow from the 1998 cleat is replaced by the brand’s signature Volt hue. Original silver has been updated with a metallic finish.
Just 1,998 pairs of the Mercurial IX Special Edition were produced and they sold out instantly earlier this month. However, we’re providing you with a second chance to get your hands on these elusive cleats.
