The St. John’s Red Storm took the court against the Duke Blue Devils at Madison Square Garden on Sunday as a huge underdog. Like the odds would suggest, the score would end up being lopsided, but not in favor of the team we expected. Led by Dwight Hardy’s sensational 26-point night and a big game from Justin Brownlee, St. John’s ran Duke out of the Garden by a score of 93-78.
The Red Storm got off to a hot start, using an aggressive trap defense to keep the Blue Devils cold for the half. Duke shot just 29 percent in the first half, including 1-for-13 from three-point range. St. John’s led 46-25 at halftime.
Duke came out a little better in the second half, scoring 53 points on 18-for-35 shooting. However, their defensive effort never quite matched their offensive intensity. St. John’s rolled off 47 second-half points to keep Duke at Bay and cruise to an easy win.
