Eastbay Memory Lane // Air Jordan 12 ‘Taxi’ December 1996

words // Brandon Richard

History will repeat itself this weekend, when the ‘Taxi’ Air Jordan 12 makes its highly anticipated return. Seventeen years ago, sneakerheads also had the opportunity to grab the classic for the holidays, when it graced our December 1996 catalog.

Today’s Eastbay Memory Lane focuses on Page 3, which the ‘Taxi’ 12 shared with Charles Barkley’s Air CB 34 and various Air Flight models. You’ll mainly recognize the Air Zoom Flight, one of the shoes Penny Hardaway wore prior to having his own signature line.

Did you own the original ‘Taxi’ 12 in 96-97? After seeing the incredible Frozen Moment commercial, there was no way I wasn’t getting a pair. They were mostly sold out in my area, but I managed to find them in a size and a half too large. No problem — stuffed socks in the toebox and the rest is history. I definitely don’t recommend doing that now, though.

The Zoom Flight Mid! Had a pair in the 4th grade. Still searching for a pair of the white/navy colorway!

  2. Lem says:

Couldn’t get the 12’s back then but I did end up getting the Grant Hills! Good times!

  3. Lem – Grant Hills were just as popular in my area at the time. Definitely great kicks.
